A new course titled Scientific Entrepreneurship introduced some 40 undergraduate science majors to the process of translating research discoveries into commercial applications. Dean of the College of Science Greg Crawford taught the course which included guest speakers with expertise in business startups, technology transfer and teambuilding to provide details about critical elements of the translational process. Topics included intellectual property protection, due diligence, prototyping and marketing.
Students formed teams and received information about research discoveries by Notre Dame faculty, especially in the fields of energy, environment and health, that could be the basis of new businesses. They composed mission statements, rehearsed attention-grabbing elevator pitches aimed at attracting investors and developed business plans. The course culminated in presentations before a panel of business leaders and experts. Some students expect to continue their research and explore the possibility of starting companies.
Local television station WNDU featured the student’s presentations the day they presented their business plans, May 5, 2009.
