Environmental Sciences

Environmental ScienceThe program in Environmental Science is housed in the Department of Biological Sciences and directed by Paul Grimstad. The major is an interdisciplinary program designed to build sensitivity and breadth in environmental areas. The curriculum exposes students to a scientific view of our environment from biological, chemical and geological perspectives, with particular emphasis on how humans interact chemically and biologically with the environment. Considerations include material and energy resource limitations, chemical and thermal pollution and effects of environment pollution on public health. The curriculum emphasizes understanding interactions between human societies and social, ethical, economic, anthropological, and governmental points of view. Students are encouraged to strengthen their mathematical and computational skills and to participate voluntarily in environmentally-oriented research projects or summer internships. The program has a special collaborative relationship with the Science, Technology, and Values Concentration program.
