Half a Century: 50 years of One Hundred Years of Solitude

Location: Rome Global Gateway

November 30 – December 2, 2017

Cien años de soledad (1967), by the Nobel laureate Gabriel García-Márquez, is the best-known Latin American novel of the twentieth-century. In recognition of the 50th anniversary of its publication, this symposium will convene its most engaging established and rising scholarly interpreters. This symposium will ask its participants for critical reflection, not homage. After 50 years, 35 translations, and 30 million copies, it is high time for a re-assessment of the cultural politics of this novel. Seeking formulations of and reflections on new questions about the historical, material and philosophical problems that the novel raises, the meeting will have the goal to set a new agenda for the continued study of Latin America’s most prominent novel, one that both reflects on the history of interpretations of the novel and contemplates how the novel can speak to us anew today.
