Our Universe Revealed Lecture Series (Physics for Everyone) - Hubble's Recent Hits and a Look Forward to the James Webb Space Telescope

Location: 101 Jordan Hall of Science (View on map )

Presenter: Jason Kalirai, Ph.D., Multi-Mission Project Scientist, Space Telescope Science Institute

Recent discoveries from the Hubble Space Telescope have reshaped our understanding of our place in the cosmos. As Hubble continues to amaze us with its breathtaking imagery, it has also uncovered new mysteries. To answer these, NASA is building a more powerful telescope—the James Webb Space Telescope—which is scheduled to launch next year. With its 21-foot gold mirror, Webb will be our deepest space exploration tool and will trace our cosmic origins back to the first stars and galaxies that seeded our universe. Representing a new generation’s Hubble, this incredible new telescope is about to usher in a new era of precision space astronomy.
