It was 25 years ago today...
...when the University dedicated Stepan Chemistry Hall. Who was the headliner at this gala affair, but Walter Cronkite. The venerable CBS News anchor came to campus for the event and warned in his address that America faced a “social, economic, and political upheaval” because of our failure to teach science properly.
Other dignitaries attending the event were: Rep. Don Fuqua, chairman of the Committee on Science and Technology; John W. Hanley, chairman of the board of the Monsanto Company; Stuart A. Rice, Dean of the Division of Physical Sciences, University of Chicago; and John B. Slaughter, director of the National Science Foundation.
The building is named in honor of Alfred C. Stepan, Jr., a 1931 Notre Dame graduate who founded the Stepan Chemical Company of Northfield, Ill.
