Jacqueline Stoneburner spent last summer working on a research project with Christine Petti, M.D., F.A.C.S., medical director of the Palos Verdes Plastic Surgery Medical Center in Los Angeles, Calif., and will be the second author on an upcoming paper about their research. The project, “Laser-Assisted Body Contouring with a Novel Fiber for Targeted Energy Delivery: A New Modality for Simultaneous Treatment of and Skin and Adipose Tissue,” was also recently presented by Dr. Petti at the 34th Annual Meeting of the American Society for Laser Medicine and Surgery in Phoenix, Ariz.

Their research focused on developing a protocol for the combination of two laser procedures, CellulazeTM and SmartlipoTM. Stoneburner, a sophomore science-business and Spanish double major, was responsible for the collection patient data from 16 female patients and collaborating directly with a representative from Cynosure Aesthetic Lasers, the company that sponsored the research study. In collaboration with Dr. Petti, Stoneburner analyzed data, completed the background research from previous published sources, and wrote the manuscript.

“I am proud that I was able to contribute to the scientific paper with only the background I had from my freshman biology classes and labs at Notre Dame,” Stoneburner explained. “I have learned so much in regards to human anatomy, laser techniques, and parameters to control in surgery. Dr. Petti continues to inspire me and is one of my greatest role models.”

“Jackie was an inspiration to my surgery, research, and the work that went into writing the abstract and manuscript,” Dr. Petti said. “We are going to finalize the manuscript this summer and submit this for publication this summer to the medical journal, Lasers in Surgery and Medicine.”

This experience has been very impactful on Stoneburner’s future plans and after graduating from Notre Dame, she plans to attend medical school and become a surgeon.
