The College of Science has chosen Seth Brown, associate professor of chemistry and biochemistry, as the recipient of the Shilts/Leonard Teaching Award. The award, which was conferred on May 16 at the College of Science awards luncheon, is presented for excellence in undergraduate or graduate teaching.

In his acceptance speech, Brown congratulated the graduating seniors and shared insights and reflections through a presentation that stimulated the minds and touched the hearts of the audience.

Brown, who is admired by faculty and students alike, joined the Notre Dame faculty in 1996 and specializes in stereoelectronic effects in atom transfer reactions and catalytic oxygenation reactions. He was the recipient of the Camille and Henry Dreyfus New Faculty Award for 1996, the 1998 DuPont Young Faculty Award, and the 2000 Union Carbide Innovation Recognition Program.

The award was established in 1993 and is named in honor of both Rev. James L. Shilts, C.S.C., who taught in the Department of Physics from 1961 until his death in 1982, and Eugene T. Leonard, a surgeon and 1940 alumnus of the University who endowed the award.
