Scientia, the undergraduate journal of scientific research, held a seminar entitled “Talk Science” on Thursday, Nov. 8 in the Jordan Hall of Science. Approximately 60 students attended the seminar to hear research presentations from a faculty member and a fellow undergraduate researcher.

Huy Huynh, assistant professor of the practice in the Department of Applied and Computational Mathematics and Statistics (ACMS), discussed the different statistical methods that can be applied to measure biological diversity. He also talked about how probability and statistics can be applied to making decisions regarding stock and options trading. Huynh is a new faculty member at Notre Dame who joined the department this fall.

Junior physics major Grace Meikle gave a presentation about the cost effectiveness and efficiency of solar energy in communities around the world. During her time as an undergraduate, she has conducted solar energy research in Japan, India and at Notre Dame.   Meikle works in the lab of Prashant Kamat, the Rev. John A. Zahm, C.S.C. Professor of Science in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, where she studies the synthesis of solar paint consisting of CdSe quantum dots on TiO2 nanoparticles using the pseudo-SILAR method.

The seminar wrapped up with a presentation from Scientia team members about participating in the development of the next publication of the journal.  Volunteers are needed to review articles, layout the journal and write news articles.  If students missed the meeting, they can email Scientia@nd.edu for more information about the volunteer roles.

“Talk Science” seminars are held monthly and will be advertised on the science.nd.edu events calendar.  For more information about the seminars or Scientia, contact Rebecca Marton or Rachel Cotton, Scientia Editors-in-Chief.
