Undergraduate Mathematics Research Conference

Author: Gene Stowe

Mathematics majors will be presenting their research experiences through a conference titled “Undergraduate Work in Mathematics (What I Did for My Summer Vacation)” from 1:00 to 5:00p.m. on Sunday, September 30 in room 117 of the Hayes-Healy Center.

The conference will open with a panel discussion on undergraduate mathematics at 1:00 p.m. followed by individual student presentations from 2:30 to 5:00 p.m. by students who participated in Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REUs) and other research projects at the University of Washington, Cornell University, Claremont Colleges, Williams College and the University of Notre Dame. The students’ research on various topics including group theory, topology, knot theory, graph theory, and linear algebra has applications to many interesting problems in mathematics.

The conference seeks to educate students on the broad spectrum of opportunities in mathematics including how to become involved with mathematical research with faculty at Notre Dame, as well as how to find summer programs, REUs, and research projects across the nation.

The conference is free and is open to all undergraduate students who are interested in majoring in mathematics. It is organized by senior honors mathematics major Adam Boocher with guidance from Claudia Polini, associate professor of mathematics, and is sponsored by the Department of Mathematics.
