PRE-REGISTERED EXHIBITOR GUIDELINES FOR FAIR COORDINATORS

************************************************

1. Exhibits on any scientific subject made by students may be entered if students are enrolled in any class from grade 4 through grade 12 in any public, private or parochial or home school in
St. Joseph, Elkhart, Marshall and Fulton Counties and the school has pre-registered for NIRSEF.

2. A pre-registered exhibit may be entered only if it is recommended by the student's school or group representative.

3. All exhibits will be judged for appropriate awards according to level and division. A student may enter only one exhibit (regardless if it’s an individual or team project entry).

4. Teachers and sponsors may only advise. An exhibit must not be an identical repetition of one shown by the same exhibitor at a fair of a previous year.

5. Exhibits must be confined to a table or floor space 30 inches front to back, by 48 inches side to side, or smaller. Maximum floor to top height is 9 feet.

6. Proper attention to safety is expected of all fair participants. Anything which could be hazardous in public display is prohibited.  We recommend that scientific equipment that is fragile or expensive NOT be displayed with the projects unless they are absolutely necessary to the display’s presentation.  The Fair is not responsible for theft, damage or breakage to any equipment.

7. Construction must be durable; movable parts firmly attached and safe. All switches and cords for 110-volt operation must be of approved UL variety. Each house current-operated exhibit must be provided with six or more feet of cord and the popular style of parallel plug (grounded plugs preferred).

8. Dangerous chemicals, open flames and explosives must not be exhibited. Plants must be watered. Experiments on live animals must conform to regulations for experiments withanimals set forth by the International Science and Engineering Fair. Failure to do so will disqualify exhibit. No live vertebrate animals may be exhibited.

9. Exhibitors may bring their exhibits to the Stepan Center on the Campus of the University of Notre Dame on Friday, March 2, 2007, between 5:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. or on Saturday, March 3, 2007 between 8:00 a.m. and 9:00 a.m.  Exhibits must be removed on March 3, following the Awards Presentation, but not earlier.

10. Judges will evaluate exhibits on March 3, 2007, between 9:00 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. Only judges, the fair committee (including fair volunteers) and exhibitors will be permitted in exhibit area during the judging. Exhibitors must be present during the judging. Please communicate this information to all parents!! Scoring will be on work done by exhibitors, not on value of accessory equipment either borrowed or purchased. Criteria for judgment will be based on creative ability, scientific thought, thoroughness, skill, clarity and communicative value (refer to the Rules page for Judging criteria and point values assigned). If they desire to do so, judges may interview some or all exhibitors. Decision of the judges will be final.

NOTE
Project Entry Forms have been revised to reflect ISEF Category Changes!!

If you have any questions, contact Karen Morris at the NIRSEF office.

The Northern Indiana Regional Science and Engineering Fair operates under the rules of the INTEL International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF). It is imperative that ANY JUNIOR OR SENIOR PROJECTS with live vertebrate animals be reviewed by our Scientific Review Committee (SRC) PRIOR TO EXPERIMENTATION.  Elementary projects should also be submitted to assure that animals are experimented with, cared for and, if necessary, disposed of in a humane fashion.  If you have any questions CONTACT ME IMMEDIATELY!!!

In all cases, we discourage the use of live animals in experimentation in accordance with ISEF guidelines.

JUDGING

Criteria for judging will be:
creative ability = 30 points
scientific thought = 30 points
thoroughness = 15 points
skill = 15 points
clarity = 10 points
teamwork (for groups)

GENERAL INFORMATION FOR PRE-REGISTERED SCHOOLS

Pre-registered individual and team projects may be entered at all levels. A team project is one that has been developed by two or three students at their level (e.g elementary – grades 4-6; junior – grades 7-8; senior – grades 9-12) and will require only one space for display. For each team project, submit only the TEAM entry form that lists the names of all the participating students. Team projects will be judged separately from individual projects, and special awards, if applicable, will only be awarded as one per team. All individual entrants and team members earning category awards will receive ribbons. All students - individual entrants and those in team projects- must pay an entry fee per person. Please note that team project members are counted as individuals and not per project.  This might complicate the numbers of projects your school might send to the Fair.

***For example, if your school has 3 elementary spaces available as its quota, and it has***

***been decided that a team of 3 students and 2 individuals merit entrance to the Fair, then***

***the school must decide whom to send because 3 spaces = 3 individuals.***

Pre-registered exhibits may be erected between 5:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. on Friday, March 2nd and between 8:00 a.m. - 9:00 a.m. on Saturday, March 3rd. It is suggested that, if possible, students from the South Bend area erect their projects on Friday evening. Other students may erect their projects either Friday evening or Saturday morning.

Judging will occur on Saturday, March 3rd from 9:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Only judges, the fair committee (including pre-registered volunteers) and exhibitors will be permitted in exhibit area during the judging. In addition, we will be closed during the lunch hour from 12:30 – 1:30 p.m.  Please communicate this information to all parents!! First, second, and third place as well as exhibitor ribbons will be awarded as well as more than one hundred (100) special awards.

Make certain students have complied with all of the rules as they have been distributed. Any project involving humans, vertebrate animals, controlled substances, lasers, recombinant DNA or gasohol must comply with the rules of the International Science and Engineering Fair. This information should have been mailed to you earlier.  Please contact the Executive Director of the Fair, Karen Morris, if you have any further questions (alternately, you can access all forms from the NIRSEF website at: science.nd.edu/nirsef). Pay particular attention to the size of the display and that no live vertebrate animals be exhibited.

Entry forms and entry fees must be returned
by Friday, February 23rd, 2007.
You are urged to submit the entry forms and fees earlier, if at all possible.

Please submit materials from your school in one packet.

Students will not be entered into the Fair if both are not received.

If you have any questions about the items discussed on this page or about the Fair in general, please write, e-mail or contact Karen Morris at (574) 631-6945 or morris.3@nd.edu.
