College of Science Outreach ProgramsZebrafish embryos

 
BioEYES brings a one-week science activity to more than 100 area K-12 classrooms where students study genetics and embryonic development of zebrafish. Teachers attend a summer institute to learn more about zebrafish and modern biochemistry lab techniques.

The Digital Visualization Theater in the Jordan Hall of Science is a state-of-the-art projection facility in a 50-foot-tall dome, that is used for instruction across the University. Throughout the year, there are also presentations for the campus community and for the public, including a Christmas star program in December.

Joint Institute for Nuclear Astrophysics (JINA) fosters interdisciplinary collaborations, research programs and educational activities. Among other initiatives, the week-long JINA Sensing our World Summer Science Camp brings students aged 11 to 14 to campus for learning.

Northern Indiana Regional Science and Engineering Fair invites students to bring their science projects to campus, organized by grade levels – elementary (3-5), junior (6-8) and senior (9-12). Participants may advance to the Hoosier Science and Engineering Fair, sponsored by the Science

Notre Dame Laboratory Instrumentation Giving Hope To Students (ND Lights) takes working equipment and instrumentation from retired or upgraded laboratories at the University of Notre Dame and donates them to Catholic schools in need of laboratory equipment, beginning with ACE schools. The collaboration includes the Office of Sustainability and the College of Engineering.

Notre Dame extended Research Community (NDeRC) teams K-12 teachers and students with graduate students for eight weeks of summer research in the graduate student’s area of expertise. The teams in the course of research discuss and plan how to improve local K-12 education.

QuarkNet, sponsored by the National Science Foundation and the Department of Energy, brings together mentors and educators from the Department of Physics with local science teachers for a firsthand experience of current physics research. The relationships aid in developing curriculum and supporting K-12 science teachers.

RET@ND provides opportunities for area teachers to work with our faculty, graduate students and undergraduate students in the College of Science. The on-campus experience supports teachers’ efforts to develop new curricular models for their classrooms.

Science Café offers a monthly casual gathering in downtown South Bend to promote scientific interest and literacy in the community. The events introduce new topics in science and engineering and invite audience participation.

Siemens Competition in Math, Science and Technology, one of the nation’s premier competitions in science, holds it Midwest Regional event at the University of Notre Dame, one of six major research universities who host such events. Notre Dame faculty in the College of Science judge the independent research projects that can win cash awards or scholarships.
