In addition to the breadth and depth of research conducted within the College of Science, we partner with a wide range of centers and institutes at Notre Dame, research groups at other universities, businesses and industry. The goal of these partnerships is a sharing of knowledge so that our basic research will bear fruit in a better life for the whole society— in medicine, computer technology, energy, education and other fields.
Discoveries in cell function, for example, can bring about healing and disease prevention, so we work with pharmaceutical companies and other medical experts, such as the Indiana University School of Medicine. Discoveries at the Midwest Institute for Nanoelectronics Discovery (MIND) and other basic research here in the college can lead to business projects at Innovation Park. We also recognize the importance of collaboration across the campus, so we work closely with the Office of Research, the College of Engineering, the Center for Research Computing and others. The National Science Foundation, the National Institutes of Health, the Lilly Foundation and others support our research across the fields of math, chemistry, biology, medicine and physics.
Partnerships with such organizations as the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation bring about improvements in public health, including the fight against malaria worldwide and lymphatic filariasis, particularly in Haiti. The partnerships are local as well as global; through our student clubs, students are tutoring in local schools and volunteering in community-based agencies, such as the Humane Society and The Sister Maura Brannick Clinic. In addition, we work with other centers, such as the Kaneb Center, to continually improve our ability to teach. Through these and other partnerships, we extend our learning across the University, the community, the nation and the world.
