Andrew Manion Receives Churchill Scholarship
Senior honors math major Andrew Manion has just received a Churchill Scholarship from the Winston Churchill Foundation. He is one of only 12 winners this year nationwide.
The scholarship is tenable at the University of Cambridge and covers all tuition and fees as well as a generous living stipend, totaling approximating $50,000. Manion will complete Part III of the Tripos, which is essentially a master’s degree in mathematics at Cambridge University. He then plans to pursue a PhD in Mathematics.
Established in 1959, the Winston Churchill Foundation was founded by American friends of Churchill, who wanted to fulfill his wish of always having young American graduate students at Churchill College at the University of Cambridge. The Foundation’s scholarship program offers American citizens of exceptional ability and outstanding achievement the opportunity to pursue graduate studies in engineering, mathematics, or the sciences at Cambridge.
This is the 35th national fellowship received by a Notre Dame honors math major since 1990; thirty-three of these students have been members of SUMR (Seminar for Undergraduate Mathematics Research). Manion has also been a member of SUMR.
Manion is completing an honors senior thesis with Jeff Diller, associate professor of mathematics
