Furdyna Chairs 10-Year Review of American Institute of Physics
Jacek Furdyna, the Marquez Professor of Physics, was invited by the American Institute of Physics (AIP) to organize and chair the review of AIP journal Applied Physics Letters. The invitation is a rare honor, signaling peers’ respect for Furdyna’s work at Notre Dame. The Applied Physics Letters and its sister journal, the Journal of Applied Physics, are reviewed every 10 years by external committees.
Furdyna, an expert in semiconductors and their nanostructures, was one of two physicists recruited to organize an eight-person committee to assess the Applied Physics Letters and the Journal of Applied Physics, partly to insure that emerging topics such as bioelectronics, nanotechnology, and other emerging fields are adequately represented. The panel convened in October 2009 at Argonne National Laboratory and has just submitted its report to the American Institute of Physics. The prestigious Applied Physics Letters typically publishes fewer than half of the some 12,000 submissions it typically receives each year from around the world.
