Former Miller Lab Members Celebrate His Birthday

Marvin Miller

Dozens of current and former members of Prof. Marvin J. Miller’s group attended a symposium, “Marvin Miller: A Legacy of Biomedical Research,” on Oct. 25 in honor of Miller’s 60th birthday. The event included talks and poster presentations from experts at Notre Dame, other universities, and industry research laboratories. Miller’s research involves synthetic organic chemistry, bioorganic chemistry and biomedical areas of investigation, especially infectious diseases and cancer.

Miller, who earned his PhD at Cornell University and did postdoctoral research at the University of California at Berkeley, came to Notre Dame in 1977. He has held the George and Winifred Clark Chair of Chemistry for 12 years. He has also been chair of the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry. His group usually includes 20 to 25 students, post-docs and coworkers. Miller has directed the thesis and dissertation research of more than 70 M.S. and PhD students and supervised 60 post-docs and dozens of undergraduates.

Miller, who has 20 patents, has written more than 230 journal articles and other publications and more than 140 meeting abstracts. He has given more than 180 scientific lectures at other universities, companies, government agencies and scientific conferences. He often consults at top pharmaceutical corporations.
