What character traits are essential to the practice of science? What epistemic and ethical values guide this practice and how are they transmitted in the scientific community? Robert Pennock will discuss preliminary results from the Scientific Virtues Project (https://www.msu.edu/~svp/), a national survey exploring the values that define what it means to be a scientist.
A national leader in evolution education and science ethics, Pennock is a professor at MSU, serving on the faculty of Lyman Briggs College and the departments of Philosophy, Computer Science & Engineering, and Ecology, Evolutionary Biology, and Behavior (https://www.msu.edu/~pennock5/). His research involves experimental and philosophical questions related to evolutionary biology and cognitive science. He also served as an expert witness in the Kitzmiller v. Dover Area Board Intelligent Design creationism case.
