Clinical and Translational Research and Careers in Health Care: What's it like to be an oncologist?

Location: 283 Galvin Life Sciences Center (View on map )

Interested in clinical research and/or a dual degree in medicine? Join us at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 30 to hear from Jose´ A. Bufill, M.D., partner, Michiana Hematology Oncology, PC, and director of the cancer genetics program at St. Joseph Regional Medical Center.

His research and clinical efforts are part of a burgeoning aspect of health care focused on personalized medicine.  Acknowledging that the genetic profiles of tumors can vary across patients, oncologists are increasingly availing themselves of genomic techniques that facilitate the tailoring of cancer therapies to a specific tumor type.  This approach increases the efficacy of cancer treatments and requires physicians to become more intimately involved in ongoing advances in understanding cancer biology.  Such a perspective will undoubtedly characterize the many aspects of health care training experienced by our students in their postgraduate programs.
