The Rise of a Brave New China

Xiao Qiang, director of Counter-Power Lab, University of California at Berkeley, and founder and editor-in-chief of China Digital Times, will talk about how, five year after the Chinese Communist Party opened fire on peaceful protesters demanding democracy, the internet arrived in China. This was twenty five years ago, and it empowered citizens to speak their minds, share information, and even organize protests. But since 2012m the Chinese Party-State has intensified a crackdown on digital activism and online speech. At the same time, a new generation of technology is greatly enhancing and amplifying the state's capacity to monitor and control the country's 1.4 billion people.
