Measuring the distance to space borne objects is one of the most difficult tasks in astronomy. The first measurements of the distance to the Sun required global adventure, and cost the lives of some of the best astronomers of the day. As late as 1920, astronomers were still debating the size and scale of the Milky Way, and had yet to be sure that other galaxies even existed.
