The Global Freshwater Crisis: Science, Society, and Spirituality

Clean water is plausibly the “new oil.” Fresh water is arguably the planet’s most imperiled resource, with more than two billion people lacking access to clean water, and half of the world with inadequate wastewater treatment. How will the environment and society deal with this freshwater crisis, and what are possible solutions to ensuring an adequate supply of clean fresh water for all humans, as advocated in Pope Francis' 2015 encyclical Laudato si'?

Gary Lamberti, Ph.D. is the Rev. Julius A. Nieuwland C.S.C. Professor Emeritus of Aquatic Science in the Department of Biological Sciences at the University of Notre Dame, where he specializes in stream and wetland ecology on a changing planet. He has served as a past chair of the Department of Biological Sciences, a program director inr the Division of Environmental Biology at the National Science Foundation, president of the Society of Freshwater Science, and as the Gillen Acting Director of the University of Notre Dame Environmental Research Center.
