Will give a Topology Seminar entitled:
Rigidity phenomena in mapping class groups
Abstract: The mapping class group of a surface is its homeomorphism group up to homotopy, an object that arises naturally in complex geometry and 3-manifold theory. In analogy with Margulis superrigidity, homomorphisms between mapping class groups have been classified under certain conditions, and are expected in general to be described in terms of the topology of the surfaces. In the talk, we will outline the history, evolution and recent progress in this direction. To keep the discussion accesible, we will introduce the necessary definitions, properties and examples.
