Join the Just Transformations to Sustainability Initiative in welcoming Professor Janet Franklin for the Notre Dame Seminars on Sustainability Series. We invite all attendees to stay afterward for lunch, conversation, and fellowship in 125 DeBartolo Hall as we work together to grow this vital network on campus.
Janet Franklin, Endowed Campanile Foundation Professor in the Department of Geography at San Diego State University, will join the Notre Dame community in the ongoing lecture series Notre Dame Seminars on Sustainability. Recently, Professor Franklin has been reading about the science of awe. Research on that emotion shows that awe inspires rigorous and critical thinking. The natural world is an important source of awe. For 40 years, she has been working as a landscape ecologist and a conservation biogeographer. She is a scientist who builds models and design studies to understand how humans affect ecological systems at the landscape scale (deforestation, climate change, urban growth). Field work is her favorite part of the job, but she has always felt that the awe-seeking needed to be justified with ‘real work’ – number crunching and hypothesis testing. But now, the search for awe has made her a better scientist by placing vast mysteries within complex systems of understanding, and seeing everyone as part of that system – a small part. The public seminar is on October 9th from 11:00 a.m.-noon in 129 DeBartolo Hall with a lunch reception to follow. This is an in-person, free, and non-ticketed event.
Her research expertise is in Landscape Ecology, Global Change Biology, Conservation Biogeography, and Geospatial Science. She is a Member of the National Academy of Sciences, USA, and a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and the Ecological Society of America.
For Students: This event counts towards the Sustainability Cup. A sign-in sheet will be available at the event.
