The University of Notre Dame College of Science will present a three-part series of symposia and lectures in London, England, throughout the month of October.
With topics from the frontiers of physics, biological sciences, and chemistry, this program, hosted by Notre Dame researchers, seeks to expand the University's scholarly conversations to a global audience. Each event brings together researchers from the United Kingdom, Europe, and the United States and is intended to stimulate intellectual exchange, introduce Notre Dame research to new audiences, and create opportunities for future transatlantic collaboration.
The sessions, located in Marian Kennedy Fischer Hall at the Notre Dame London Campus, are as follows:
October 2, 2026:
The opening event, Mind the Gap: Bridging the Architecture of Brains and Machines, is chaired by Notre Dame Professor of Physics & Astronomy Zoltan Toroczkai. This one-day symposium explores the future of biologically-inspired computation and how it informs the design of artificial intelligence. The conference will showcase scholars from the University of Notre Dame, Oxford, King’s College London, ETH Zurich, University of Lyon, and more.
October 13, 2026:
Notre Dame Associate Professor of Biology Giles Duffield will present a lecture entitled Circadian and Photo-Biology of Disease Mosquitoes. This public event will investigate the intersection of biological clocks, light, mosquito biology, and disease. Duffield will discuss how the physiology and behavior of disease-vector mosquitoes is impacted by light-driven systems.
October 30, 2026:
The final event is chaired by Shahriar Mobashery, Navari Family Professor in Life Sciences in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry. The symposium, Antibiotics and Antibiotic Resistance, explores the global phenomenon of antibiotic resistance. The discussion will also cover the nature and mechanisms of antibiotics considered in light of the development of new therapeutics. The keynote will be delivered by Christopher Schofield of the University of Oxford, and will showcase lectures by experts from France, Germany, the Netherlands, the U.K., and the U.S..
All events are free to attend, but advanced registration for each individual event is required.
