The college football national championship for the highest level of competition is decided by a complicated arrangement called the Bowl Championship Series (also known as the BCS) that has been developed over the last 15 years. It remains a source of great controversy every fall as teams rise and fall in the rankings and thereby increase or decrease their chance of playing for the championship. A recent book called “Death to the BCS” raised a number of economic and political issues associated with the controversy. This includes a discussion of alternative methods for rating teams and alternative approaches for choosing a champion.
