Leading quantitative social science researcher from the University of Glasgow, Brian Fogarty, has been named the new director of the Center for Social Science Research (CSSR) within the University of Notre Dame’s Center for Research Computing (CRC).
“Brian Fogarty’s previous roles hold a wealth of leadership experience in the social sciences, and we are grateful to have him at Notre Dame,” said Robert J. Bernhard, vice president for research and professor of aerospace and mechanical engineering. “With his leadership, we will continue to build upon and extend support of the CSSR to all social science researchers across the University. In this era of big data, Notre Dame believes more than ever that there are tremendous opportunities for our faculty and students to benefit from the support system offered by the CSSR.”
Before joining Notre Dame, Fogarty was a lecturer in Quantitative Social Science at the University of Glasgow’s Q-Step Centre. The centre aimed to develop and train quantitatively-skilled social science graduates. Prior to Glasgow, Fogarty was an associate professor of political science at the University of Missouri – St. Louis. As director of the CSSR, Fogarty will work with social science researchers to support their project needs.
“The CSSR is uniquely positioned to support faculty, students, and staff at Notre Dame in developing cutting-edge social science research and scholarship,” said Fogarty. “The CSSR works as a coordinating hub across the social sciences to enhance research, grant writing, and pedagogical advancements. This includes leading in harnessing existing and new expertise and opportunities across the University in quantitative analysis and data science applications of social science data. I am excited to be a part of the center and help it grow into a stronger support mechanism for Notre Dame and its research ecosystem.”
Fogarty’s quantitative analysis expertise includes research design, advanced regression modelling, and quantitative text analysis. His current research focuses on the news media as a strategic actor in politics and as an institution within the American political system as well as perceptions of voter and electoral fraud.
Speaking about hiring Fogarty, Jarek Nabrzyski, director of the CRC, said, “I am very excited Brian has joined the University of Notre Dame. I look forward to seeing how he can bring his previous experience to the CSSR and help develop the center as an outlet that assists researchers in finding appropriate resources for their projects while filling any gaps in social science research support at Notre Dame.”
The CSSR, which is a part of the CRC, is dedicated to improving the quality and efficiency of social research at the University of Notre Dame. The center offers computational services to faculty, students, and staff and offers expertise in statistical analysis, survey design and implementation, data acquisition and management, geographic information system (GIS) mapping, and more.
