Presentation Overview
The blood-brain barrier (BBB) is traditionally viewed as a static shield protecting the central nervous system. However, recent research reveals it is a highly dynamic component of neural circuitry. Dr. Richard Daneman will discuss how interactions between neural cells and vascular endothelial cells regulate brain function and behavior.
About the Speaker
Dr. Richard Daneman is a leading researcher at UC San Diego, where his lab investigates the molecular mechanisms of blood-brain barrier (BBB) function to develop new therapeutics for neurological diseases. He earned his Ph.D. in Developmental Biology at Stanford University in the laboratory of Dr. Ben Barres. His doctoral research was groundbreaking, including a landmark publication in Nature that identified the critical role of pericytes in establishing the embryonic BBB for the first time.
Following his Ph.D., Dr. Daneman launched his independent research program as a prestigious Sandler Fellow at UCSF before transitioning to his current faculty position at UCSD. His work has earned him numerous honors, such as the Rita Allen Foundation Milton E. Cassel Scholar Award, the AAA Young Investigator Award, and the ASPET Neuropharmacology Early Career Award. Beyond his scientific contributions, Dr. Daneman is a devoted educator and mentor, recognized with the NINDS Landis Award for Outstanding Mentorship.
