College of Science Funded Opportunities 

The College of Science offers undergraduates various Notre Dame-funded research opportunities on campus during the academic year and throughout the summer.

Student Research @ Notre Dame (STRAND)

STRAND (Student Research @ Notre Dame) provides undergraduate students with clear, scheduled, and equitable access to research opportunities. Mentors are professors, graduate students, or postdocs who can provide meaningful research experiences for undergraduates.

Before the 6th class day of the new semester, you can add your research credits through NOVO. Research credits are variable, and may differ based on the work you do and time spent in the lab. Please make sure to enter the correct amount of credits (click here if you have questions about how to add variable credit courses in NOVO). Two is the maximum amount of research credits allowed per semester, unless you have received permission from the Dean of Undergraduate Education. Be aware, any students who register for greater than two credits of research, without having been granted permission from the Dean, will have their schedules adjusted after NOVO has closed to reflect the maximum allowed (2 credits). If you must register for greater than 2 credits, your PI must send justification of your contact hours to the Dean of Undergraduate Education by the 6th class day at the latest.

Important Reminder: All College of Science undergraduates taking research for credit must sign up for the research classes by the end of the add/drop period (the sixth class day). This is extremely important if you will be requesting an overload to get involved in research. If you do not add the research class by the add/drop deadline, you can still join a lab, but it must be for 0 credits in the relevant research class.

Tips for Discovering Research Positions

The search for research opportunities is best started sooner rather than later! Looking for more guidance? 

  • Get connected with the Flatley Center for Undergraduate Scholarly Engagement. 
  • Contact the Director of Undergraduate Studies in the department of your intended major.  
  • The Meruelo Family Center for Career Development offers a helpful resource to find summer internships, including a database of companies and websites.
  • Visit departmental websites, where faculty will describe their research interests.  
  • Talk to instructors of your courses, especially those you have enjoyed.  
  • Take advantage of events that promote undergraduate research.  
  • Talk to other students already engaged in research.
  • Join Irish Compass, Notre Dame's official online community driving powerful professional connections, to leverage the Notre Dame Network in your search for meaningful research opportunities. Many Notre Dame science alumni at research universities, laboratories, and hospitals throughout the country are willing and excited to work with undergraduate researchers.
